Bultmann, Rudolf Karl

Bultmann, Rudolf Karl
(1884-1976)
A theologian and scholar of the New Testament, Bultmann was influenced by neo-Kantianism and the existentialism of Martin Heidegger. As a result, he categorically denied that there could be any miracles, including the resurrection of Jesus. Instead, he placed the basis of Christianity in the existential choice for the Christ of faith. As such, Bultmann defended a 'demythologisation' of the Bible that reinterpreted the gospel in modern existentialist terms shorn of supernatural dressing. Critics objected that, once one begins the process of demythologisation, there is no principled means to stop it this side of atheism.
